Seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
